Customs has courts ok to search computer content
A federal appeals court in California found that the government does not need “reasonable suspicion” as it has a nearly absolute right to check out traveler’s electronic devices, including laptop computers. The ruling reverses a lower court decision and has prompted groups to warn travelers about what contents they keep on their electronic media devices. Susan Gurley, global executive director of the Association of Corporate Travel Executives, indicated that she thought the issue will resurface in courts or in Congress, although she warned that the ruling probably will remain.
